Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Rwanda is home to over a third of the world’s mountain gorillas, and the country’s strict conservation efforts have ensured that this endangered species is protected and thriving. Visitors to Rwanda can embark on a guided trek to see these majestic creatures up close in their natural habitat.

The trekking experience usually begins early in the morning, after a briefing session with park rangers. Trekkers are divided into small groups of 8 and assigned to a particular gorilla group. The trek can take anything from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas and the terrain. The trek is both physically demanding and rewarding, as trekkers must navigate steep hills and dense jungle to reach the gorillas.

Once the gorillas are located, trekkers have one hour to observe and take photos of the gorillas interacting in their natural habitat. Watching these gentle giants interact with each other, groom their young and feed is a truly mesmerizing experience. Gorillas are also incredibly intelligent and curious creatures, so visitors may also get to witness playful and inquisitive behavior.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda requires a gorilla permit, which costs $1500 per person. The proceeds from these permits go towards gorilla conservation efforts and local communities, which are empowered by tourism. It is recommended to book permits in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee trekking is an incredible wildlife experience that takes you deep into the heart of Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park. The park is home to over 400 chimpanzees, making it one of the best places in Africa to see these intelligent animals up close.

To get to the chimpanzees, you will have to hike through the forest with the help of an experienced guide. The trek can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day, depending on where the chimps are located. Along the way, you will have the chance to see other wildlife such as colobus monkeys and forest elephants.

Once you locate a group of chimpanzees, you will be able to spend up to an hour with them, watching them play, groom each other, and go about their daily lives. You may even witness their vocalizations, which are known to be one of the most complex and diverse of any non-human species.

It is important to note that chimpanzee trekking is a strictly regulated activity, with a limited number of permits available each day.
