Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro – Be delighted to touch the skies as you Hike to the highest point in Africa

Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is a delightful experience that any adventurer must think of when planning a safari to Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is a true African jewel and the Seven Summits crown. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, its highest point is at 5,895m.

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro dates back to early 1889 when the first European explorer, Hans Meyer, became the first European to reach the summit. Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro takes you through the varying ecosystems and weather conditions, from rainforest and alpine desert zones up to the Arctic.  Experience the giant Kilimanjaro on your African safari tour, Book your Safari with Acacia Safari Limited, and have a life-changing climbing adventure in Tanzania.

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a volcanic mountain located in northeastern Tanzania, close to the border with Kenya. It is the highest peak in Africa, standing at an impressive height of 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) above sea level. Kilimanjaro is considered one of the most iconic and famous mountains in the world. Travelers to Tanzania often enjoy Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro on their safaris and the experience is truly rewarding.

Mount Kilimanjaro is composed of three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo, the highest and central cone, was formed around 1 million years ago and is the only cone that is dormant rather than extinct. Mawenzi and Shira, the other two cones, are much older and have been eroded to a great extent.

The formation of Kilimanjaro can be traced back to the complex geological processes taking place in the region. It is situated within the East African Rift System, where tectonic plates are splitting apart and creating large rift valleys. About 750,000 years ago, intense volcanic activity occurred along this rift, resulting in the formation of the three volcanic cones that make up Kilimanjaro.

Over time, volcanic eruptions and subsequent erosion shaped the mountain’s current appearance. Lava flows, pyroclastic deposits, and ash layers accumulated, building up the different cones, while glacial and fluvial processes carved valleys and created the characteristic steep slopes of Kilimanjaro.

History of Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro has been significant to local communities for centuries. The mountain is considered sacred by indigenous tribes like the Chagga people, who live in its foothills. The name “Kilimanjaro” is believed to derive from the Swahili words “kilima,” meaning mountain, and “jaro,” meaning caravans. Historically, it served as a landmark and meeting point for traders and caravans traveling through East Africa.

Mount Kilimanjaro also gained international attention during the colonization period, attracting explorers and mountaineers from across the world. The first recorded successful ascent to the summit was made by German geographer Hans Meyer and Austrian alpinist Ludwig Purtscheller on October 6, 1889.

Kilimanjaro as of today is one of the popular destinations for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. It offers several climbing routes, each varying in difficulty and scenery, attracting thousands of hikers every year. The mountain’s diverse ecosystems, from rainforests to alpine deserts, provide a unique and awe-inspiring experience for those who undertake the challenging journey to its summit. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is challenging, however, the challenge is one to take for those who wish to have an adventurous climbing experience in Africa.

Different Climbing Routes on Mount Kilimanjaro – Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro offers several climbing routes, each with its characteristics, scenery, and level of difficulty. The choice of route depends on factors such as fitness level, previous hiking experience, acclimatization preferences, and the desire to experience specific landscapes.

  1. Marangu Route: Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, Marangu is the oldest and most established route on Kilimanjaro. It is often preferred by climbers seeking a shorter and less challenging trek. The route takes around 5-6 days to complete, with accommodation provided in huts along the way.
  2. Machame Route: This route is considered one of the most scenic and varied options on Kilimanjaro. It is a bit more challenging than Marangu, but it offers a better chance of acclimatization due to its longer duration. Climbers usually take 6-7 days to reach the summit. Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route guarantees success at the summit since you will have more days to acclimatize during your Kilimanjaro Climbing Experience.
  3. Lemosho Route:

  4. Offering stunning views and a higher chance of successful summit bids, the Lemosho route is gaining popularity among climbers. It is a longer route, generally taking 7-8 days to complete, allowing for better acclimatization and increased chances of reaching the summit. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route is rewarding with beautiful scenery.
  5. Rongai Route: The only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, the Rongai route is known for its remote and less crowded nature. It is considered easier than some other routes but still requires a good level of fitness. The typical duration for this route is 6-7 days, with camping along the way. The Rongai Route is also a great route for those who wish to embark on a Kilimanjaro Climbing experience from the north.

  1. Northern Circuit Route: This is the newest and longest route on Kilimanjaro, providing the most extended acclimatization period. The Northern Circuit offers breathtaking views as it circumnavigates the entire mountain. It generally takes 8-9 days to climb, making it the longest but also the most successful in terms of summit success rate. If you wish to experience the highest point in Africa, you should consider climbing Mount Kilimanjaro from the Northern Circuit Route.

How do I choose a route? Which route is best for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro?

The choice of the best route depends on individual preferences and objectives. The Machame and Lemosho routes are highly recommended by many climbers due to their scenic beauty and better acclimatization opportunities.

It’s important to note that climbing Kilimanjaro is a physically demanding endeavor that requires adequate preparation, appropriate gear, and consideration of the potential risks associated with high-altitude trekking. For a better Mount Kilimanjaro hiking/climbing experience, book your tour with Acacia Safaris Limited who will ensure proper safety measures, and support your journey to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

How to prepare for a hiking safari to Mountain Kilimanjaro – Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro

Before you fly to Tanzania for a Hiking Safari to Kilimanjaro, you need to prepare well. Hiking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro requires careful planning and preparation and here are some of the tips on how best you can prepare for Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro.

Physical fitness

To hike Mount Kilimanjaro, you need to be in good physical shape. Since the trail involves steep ascents and descents in high-altitude environments, you need to prepare your body for the physical demands of the hike. Try to train at least 3-4 months before the climb. Regular cardiovascular exercises, such as running, cycling, or hiking, can help increase your endurance and strength.

Acclimatization

Spending time at high elevation can cause altitude sickness, which can be serious and, in some cases, life-threatening. We usually advise our clients to choose a longer climbing route that provides better acclimatization opportunities. We also recommend you take advantage of opportunities to spend time at higher elevations before your trek.

Appropriate gear

When embarking on any safari to Africa, it is always important to have the right equipment for your safari. Among the must-carry are comfortable and sturdy hiking boots. Layered clothing options that can be added or removed depending on the climatic conditions are also recommended. Other essential items include a good-quality sleeping bag, heavy-duty gloves, a warm hat, and sunglasses.

Light packing is essential since porters will be carrying your gear. Pack essentials such as waterproof gear, sunblock, and insect repellent. Make sure you have a functional headlamp and extra batteries. Make sure to carry a reusable water bottle for better hydration during your climb.

Diet

Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet is a crucial part of your preparation. Eat high-carbohydrate foods for energy, including pasta, bread, rice, and cereals. Foods that are high in potassium, such as bananas, help prevent muscle cramps.
